At 68, Clayton resident and proud “dog mom” Eileen Proctor has found a joyful new calling — turning her lifelong love of animals into a mission to inspire children. She’s the author and self-publisher of two series of illustrated children’s books starring her 7-pound Shih-Tzu mix, Phoebe, a rescue pup with a big heart and an even bigger message.

The first collection, “The Adventures of Phoebe the Wagamuffin,” tells the real-life story of Phoebe’s rescue and her journey into a loving new home. Told from the pup’s-eye view, the stories explore themes of courage, kindness and finding joy in everyday life. Each colorful book blends gentle humor, warmth and meaningful life lessons that help children see the world through an empathetic and optimistic lens.

“Phoebe is a tiny teacher with an inimitable way of making every challenge manageable and every moment joyful,” Proctor said. “I want to share her approach to life so children can grow up believing in love, possibility and themselves.”

Her second collection, “Phoebe the Pup Learning Books,” is designed for toddlers and preschoolers. These books turn early learning into playtime, teaching ABCs, numbers, colors, and shapes through catchy rhymes, bright illustrations and encouraging messages.

But Proctor’s goals reach beyond storytelling. She hopes to build an uplifting movement that helps shape confident, compassionate young readers.

“There’s no doubt that consistent exposure to positive messages from a young age will help children flourish into the best versions of themselves,” she said.

In true rescue spirit, Proctor is also giving back. A portion of every book sale supports animal rescue organizations that help more pets find their forever homes.

When she isn’t writing, Proctor helps real-life dreamers as part of the NC Small Business & Technology Development Center, where she works with entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life. A five-year resident of Clayton, she shares her home — and plenty of inspiration — with four adopted “fur kids.”Proctor’s books are available at www.PhoebeTheWagamuffin.com and fans can follow Phoebe’s adventures on Facebook at @PhoebeTheWagamuffin.
