UNC Health Johnston has recognized Claudia Garrett, a community health worker with Project Access, as Ambassador of the Month.
CEO Tom Williams said Garrett ensures patients have insulin and supplies to control their diabetes. In addition to providing information, she schedules them for diabetes education classes and follows their progress.
“Every day, she brings a positive attitude, a servant heart and an exceptional work ethic to her job,” he said. “She is thoughtful, dedicated, compassionate and always concerned about the well-being of patients.”
Prior to joining Project Access four and a half years ago, Garrett, who is bilingual, was a care manager with CommWell Health. “Throughout my career, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the lives of people,” she said.
“In my current job, I most enjoy seeing the changes in expression when patients realize what we provide to help them live a healthful lifestyle,” she said. “In Mexican culture, a diabetes diagnosis can feel like a death sentence.”
Outside the office, Garrett volunteers once a month onboard the hospital’s mobile outreach unit when it offers services at the Bright Leaf Flea Market in Smithfield. She also volunteers with the Smithfield Lions Club as an interpreter for vision screenings.
In addition to a designated month-long parking space, Garrett will receive eight hours of paid time off.
