Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation has been named a 2026 Main Street America Accredited Program, the highest level of recognition awarded to organizations focused on preservation-based economic development in historic downtown districts.
The accreditation recognizes programs that meet national standards for community revitalization, leadership, preservation efforts and measurable economic impact.
The designation marks a significant milestone for Downtown Smithfield, which lost its accreditation five years ago. Since 2024, Executive Director Heidi Gilmond and the organization’s board have worked to rebuild the program through strategic planning, downtown partnerships and revitalization initiatives.
“Regaining Main Street America accreditation is an incredible accomplishment for our organization and our community,” said Gilmond. “It validates the hard work, collaboration and commitment that has taken place over the past year and a half. This recognition confirms that Downtown Smithfield is moving in the right direction and building momentum for long-term success.”
In recent years, the organization has partnered with Johnston County, the Town of Smithfield and the Johnston County Visitors Bureau on projects aimed at improving downtown visibility, supporting businesses and encouraging investment. Efforts have included business and façade improvement grants, public art projects, expanded community events, volunteer initiatives and work to preserve the historic character of downtown.
According to the organization, downtown events now attract more than 20,000 visitors annually and generate more than $2 million in local economic impact. In 2025, Downtown Smithfield also saw $2.8 million in private investment and $230,000 in public investment.
“Revitalization takes time, persistence and collaboration,” Gilmond said. “We are proud of the progress we’ve made and remain committed to ensuring Downtown Smithfield becomes an even more vibrant and economically vital part of Smithfield and Johnston County.”
