Elementary students from across Johnston County put their skills to the test at the 2026 Elementary Science Olympiad, held this Spring at The Clayton Center. The annual event brought together 15 teams, including 14 from Johnston County Public Schools, for a day of hands-on competition and collaborative problem-solving.
Designed for students in grades 3 through 5, the Science Olympiad encourages teamwork and real-world application of science concepts. Participants spent weeks preparing with coaches, meeting regularly to build projects, study topics, and refine their skills ahead of competition day.
The event featured 15 categories across multiple sessions, combining written tests on subjects like space, the human body, and dinosaurs with engineering challenges. Students tackled creative builds such as launching bottle rockets, designing parachutes, and constructing lightweight structures capable of holding significant weight.
Beyond the competition, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and curiosity. Students worked together, supported one another, and celebrated each other’s successes throughout the day.
“The energy in the building is incredible as students show what they have learned and cheer each other on,” said Kayla Boykin, JCPS K-8 Science Teaching and Learning Specialist. “One of my favorite parts is seeing the sportsmanship and kindness between teams. It turns into a celebration of teamwork and a shared love of science!”
