When most people hear the phrase hormone therapy, they picture women navigating menopause. But according to Nichole Wilson, DNP, FNP-C, founder of Ignite Men’s Health and Willow Park Wellness, that’s only part of the story.
“Declines in estrogen, testosterone and progesterone start in our 20s and continue steadily throughout life,” Wilson said. “Those changes affect men and women alike — and the symptoms often show up long before anyone expects them.”
That means fatigue, stubborn belly weight, brain fog, sleep issues, low libido, mood swings or trouble building muscle may not simply be part of getting older. They could be signs of hormone imbalance. Hormones act as the body’s messengers, influencing everything from energy and motivation to weight regulation, bone strength, sexual health and mood. When levels fall out of balance due to age, stress, or chronic illness, quality of life often suffers.
“Patients are frequently told their labs look ‘normal,’ but still feel far from normal,” Wilson said. “I focus on optimization and my patients’ complaints, not just numbers on a page. My goal is for people to feel how they believe they should feel — energized, balanced and truly themselves.”
Every patient begins with comprehensive testing that goes beyond routine labs. From there, Wilson develops a plan that may include bioidentical hormone replacement, thyroid support, peptides, nutraceuticals or targeted medications. She emphasized that optimization is ongoing, with close monitoring of labs and symptoms to ensure long-term improvement.
While hormone optimization is the foundation of her practice, Wilson also provides treatments designed to enhance recovery, reduce inflammation and improve performance. Athletes benefit from hormone optimization alongside peptide therapies that accelerate healing and performance.
Others benefit from injections such as lipotrophin injections (skinny shots), Vitamin B12 for increased energy and metabolism or Vitamin D to overcome deficiencies. Some plans of care include GLP-1 medications for weight management and inflammation. Low-dose naltrexone is another prescription she uses to support patients dealing with chronic pain and inflammation, migraines or autoimmune conditions.
One of the biggest hurdles, Wilson said, is misinformation. Recent FDA changes remove the fear associated with Hormone Replacement Therapies. In 2025, the agency officially removed heart attack and stroke warnings from testosterone medications after studies confirmed therapy does not raise cardiovascular risks. “The science is clear — testosterone and other hormones like progesterone and estrogen can be used safely and effectively,” Wilson said. “This isn’t about age. It’s about quality of life.”
Her passion comes from seeing real people in her community reclaim their lives. She recalls a teacher who overcame classroom brain fog, a grandfather who found the energy to play with his grandkids again and a young athlete who healed weeks faster after an injury with peptide support. “These transformations are why I do what I do,” Wilson said. “Everyone deserves more than just feeling fine. They deserve to feel amazing.”
