Health and Wellness: Clean Water Matters

Water makes up more than half of the human body, fueling everything from digestion to circulation, so the quality of what we drink has a direct impact on overall health. While water systems in the United States are generally safe, even treated supplies can carry substances that may affect long-term wellness.

Glenn Guthrie, a certified water analyst with water filtration company Aquafeel Solutions, said testing can reveal areas of concern.

“Typically our tests will show elevated levels of chlorine in publicly supplied water,” he said. “In both well water and public water, we often find high counts of microscopic and conductive particles such as various heavy metals.”

Guthrie said chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant, but at higher levels it can create an unpleasant odor or taste and may irritate the skin and respiratory system. Heavy metals can accumulate in the body over time, potentially leading to neurological, cardiovascular or developmental concerns, especially in children, pregnant women and vulnerable adults.

“Both publicly supplied water and private wells can have issues with man made and natural contaminates that the systems in place and basic filters do not remove,” Guthrie said.

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit environmental watchdog organization, maintains a national tap water database that allows consumers to search by ZIP code on their website and see what contaminants have been reported in their area.

What can be done if concerns arise? “A local certified water analyst can test your water and review the findings and facts and offer some options,” Guthrie said. Professional testing can provide a clearer picture of water quality, giving households the information they need to make informed decisions.

Filtration systems are one option for those seeking cleaner water. These systems use layers of specialized media to trap sediments, neutralize chlorine, reduce heavy metals and soften water. Some also include reverse osmosis for drinking water, which forces water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved solids. Aquafeel Solutions offers home systems that combine several of these stages to address water quality at the source.

Water is essential to every part of the body, from flushing toxins to regulating temperature and supporting organ function. Ensuring that it is free from harmful substances is a practical step toward better health. Clean water is more than a convenience; it is a foundation for wellness and peace of mind.
