Anyone who knows me, or spends any time reading this column, knows how much I like a good quote.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about this one: “Humans don’t deserve dogs.”
Look, I like cats. I’d probably have one if Shanna wasn’t allergic. But we are dog people, and as I type this, Lyla and Van Gogh are waiting at home for us to return.
Consider this process for a minute. There’s a hundred things that can happen to me to spoil this day, but no matter what mood I’m in when the car pulls in the driveway, our dogs will immediately begin barking. They won’t stop until we unlock the front door and let them out, and whether I’m happy, sad, angry or indifferent, they are very happy to see me.
We’ve repeated this ritual hundreds of times, and every day, they are just as over the moon that we’re home again as they were the day before.
Where else in life can you get this kind of consistent affection? Dogs are loyal, sure, but the fact that they love us unconditionally every single day is truly special.
Maybe that’s why we get a little happier here in the office when the Dog issue comes around. Perhaps we really don’t deserve dogs, but I’m sure glad we have them.
