Since I’ve spent a good chunk of my professional life covering sports, I’ve uttered the phrase “Father Time is undefeated” more than a few times.
As I creep closer to 50, I’m now saying it about myself.
Remember the fun little ice storm we had back in February, the one that definitely wasn’t safe to drive around in? Well, as it turns out, three steps out of my front door proved to be too dangerous for me.
Now, the storm had been over for a couple of days and we had exhausted some of our household supplies. Thanks to our pals at DoorDash, we had some delivered to the house.
The only ice anywhere near our house was on our front steps and our sidewalk, thanks to the fact that water runs off the roof at that spot, and that area gets very little sunlight.
So, there was lots of ice there. A clever man might have bought some rock salt, or taken some serious measures to remove it. Sadly, we didn’t have one of those around.
Instead, as the driver pulled up in the driveway, I decided to meet them out there, so they wouldn’t have to skate down the sidewalk and attempt to climb the steps.
Another phrase I use often is “no good deed goes unpunished,” and that happened here.
My left foot hit the middle step, and the next two seconds is a blur of pavement, sky and blood as I scraped my left wrist on the brick steps and landed flat on my back on the walkway before skidding out into the front yard.
A mixture of adrenaline and embarrassment got me to my feet, and I completed my DoorDash transaction before carefully retreating into the house to assess the damage.
The verdict? Not nearly as bad as it might have been, but still a bit humbling for this aging scribe.
